Acutrac is a small device that uses a combination of location technologies to allow users to track the movement or position of their vehicle/asset via a dedicated ‘web-panel’. Users also have the ability via mobile phone, PDA or the internet to determine how the system is activated – manually or automatically for example if the vehicle/asset moves out of a pre-set area. Acutrac can also be used as a fleet management tool as other devices can be monitored on the same web panel.

Although designed primarily for motorcycles, Acutrac is perfectly suited to applications on other vehicles or assets such as caravans, trailers, plant, cars, commercials, quad bikes, agricultural vehicles and horse boxes.

The Company

Acutrac Ltd was formed in 2006 in response to the need for a new type of tracking and location system. This demand was led initially by motorcyclists and insurance companies who realised that existing systems didn’t fully meet their needs. In developing this revolutionary system, Acutrac has integrated the latest tracking technologies and also given users the opportunity to track their own vehicles/assets.

The Acutrac team has significant security industry experience particularly in the field of vehicle and specifically motorcycle electronics – one of the toughest environments for electronic devices. Technology

Tracking systems are one of the latest developments in vehicle/asset security and are increasingly being adopted as a cost effective means of countering criminal activity.

How does it work?

Most tracking systems use two out of three different technologies – satellite signals (GPS), mobile phone signals (GSM) and Radio Frequency ID (RFiD).

Acutrac uses all three. Here’s why;

• GPS tracking has fantastic location accuracy but depends on unobstructed signals and with many stolen items such as motorcycles being hidden away in a remote lock-up or container, this can sometimes block the signal.

   

• GSM signals can allow location even if the asset is in a van or a building but accuracy depends on the proximity of nearby phone masts so only a general location can be determined.

• RFiD technology is needed to get a really accurate location.RFiD basically comprises a small transmitter in the tracking system and use of a hand held scanner in the designated GSM area (or cell as they are known) to exactly pinpoint the vehicle/asset.

Activation 

Actual tracking of the vehicle/asset can be activated in a number of ways – whilst some systems rely on the owner notifying the system supplier if their vehicle/asset is missing, Acutrac offers far more. Acutrac can be activated by a call to the monitoring centre, a simple text message from your mobile phone or can be set to activate if the vehicle/asset is moved or interfered with. Acutrac can also be set to activate if the vehicle/asset moves outside any pre-determined boundary (known as a geo-fence - a "Geographical Fence") such as your property. Once triggered, users can monitor the vehicle/asset themselves or contact the monitoring centre and then the Police can be called in.

It is clear that by integrating all these technologies and features, Acutrac can be really effective in locating a vehicle/asset with the added opportunity for the Police to catch criminals in the act. It’s this aspect that has really established tracking systems as a successful product as in some cases, location of a stolen vehicle has led Police to the hiding place for many other stolen vehicles and subsequent prosecution of the criminals.

The Fun Factor!

But its not just security where Acutrac excels. As well as being able to track your vehicle in the event of theft, you can also track yourself for example on a track day or whilst touring and record your speed and recent positions on your own unique web-based mapping system. You also have the facility to track your own mobile phones and any other GSM assets on the same screen. (GSM accuracy applies here)

The mapping widow is just that, a window to the Microsoft Virtual Earth™ mapping servers. Mapping data Is approximate. 90% global with only the most volatile or inaccessible areas lacking in detail.

Your Acutrac tracking system will already have been registered for use with our service prior to dispatch.

Username an passwords will be sent to you upon dispatch, please retain these for your records as you will need to enter them into your login page every time you wish to use the service.

Acutrac will then contact you directly for subscription information.

FAQ's

How Large is the AcuTrac device?

Because it is a security device, we do not publish sizes or pictures of the AcuTrac. We will say, however, that at the time of writing (May 08) it is the smallest GPS/GSM/RFID battery-backed tracker we know of.

Why not just GPS?

GPS is, by nature, a weak signal. Although it is quite accurate in ideal conditions (Open skys, no clouds/buildings/trees) - within 15 metre's - it is extremely poor in areas of poor reception. Wet leaves will make a difference! Buildings can cut the signal completely. The Acutrac has the ability to give a "forced" GPS position, where it will give a position on only two satellites but this means it's accuracy is only within 150 metre's. If no GPS position can be obtained, we can obtain a CELL ID (Mobile phone cell site) but these areas can be quite large - up to 7 miles. We then have the ability to switch on the RFID which has a very short range - but is quite accurate.

So, with three types of location, does AcuTrac guarantee to find the asset?

No - and if anyone tells you "Yes" in this market we don't believe they are being truthful! Any tracker relies on two things to make it work; radio signals and a power supply. Cut either of these, and the device cannot respond. While the Acutrac has an in-built power supply, it's life is dependent upon how the AcuTrac has been configured. A maximum of 8 days.

What is the Current drain of the AcuTrac from the vehicle battery

The AcuTrac can be configured in many different ways, so the current drain can be variable, from 4mA to 2Amps if transmitting a lot of information. The owner can, via the web site, modify how the AcuTrac is configured. There are buttons to alter the current drain of the vehicle battery, and one in particular to enter a storage mode to reduce current drain to a minimum.

Will this tracking system work in any country?

Yes a multi region simm card is installed in every acutrac system

Can this system be transferred to another vehicle?

You can transfer the system to any vehicle or asset at anytime, it is not "hard wired" like other systems.
